Interview with an Account Manager…

5 11 2008

We asked one of our newer team members to participate in an interview about the work she does with us. Since accepting the position of Account Manager Lauren has spent many an hour explaining to friends and family what it is exactly that she does for a living and what the *&%$ “social media marketing” is.   After working for Extanz for a while now, Lauren has found it best to have two options of explanation ready to tell people what she does.  The first option:  the long winded, detailed version for those who are truly interested or fellow computer and marketing geeks.  The second option:  the short and sweet version for brief encounters or for when you feel like you are losing someone with option one and must switch over before their brain malfunctions.

Lauren’s brother kindly and somewhat involuntarily became such an interviewer in a recent conversation about Lauren’s work. Here’s the blow by blow account. There is some resemblance to real characters and also some fiction! No animals were hurt in the making of this interview. We think.

Bro – So, Lauren, what do you do exactly?

Lauren –  Well basically my job description goes something like this…I am in charge of the RSS architecture (set up and manage profiles on all social media networks like Facebook, Plaxo and Twitter) for my particular clients, I help build tag clouds, communicate with the clients on a constant basis to find out what they are doing, working on, etc. then micro-blog on several different networks for the client, manage the blogger assigned to each client, and give them support and ideas to blog about…now that’s in a nut shell (all in one breath).

Bro – rrriiiiggghhhhttt……. “So…you get paid to play on Facebook?”

Lauren – weeellll, yes brother I guess I do.  But to be honest working on Facebook on someone else’s behalf and looking at it at a marketing standpoint is not quite as fun as it is when you are surfing your own personal Facebook.  It’s a lot of work!!

Bro – rrriiiiggghhhhttt…….

Lauren – OK, so either way you look at it it’s really not that complicated of a job description, it’s just a new way of looking at the internet and marketing.  It’s new school baby. Time consuming work but quite fascinating and exciting to see your long hard work pay off.  When I see our clients Alexa ranking jump from 7 million something to 515,000 I get excited. Just the other day I came across a perfect website to post blogs, product reviews, and leave comments on for one of our new clients…I was stoked!!  I am officially a geek. So, yes I guess I do get paid to play on Facebook, but my “play” at work is paying off big time for our fellow clients and partners.

Bro – So that social media stuff really does work then……..

Lauren – sigh……. how old are you?

Thanks for the cool pic K. Ogden Photography

Cheers,

Lauren
